What Botox Actually Does (And Doesn’t)
Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is a purified neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles. When injected in small, precise doses into specific facial muscles, it reduces the muscle contractions that cause dynamic wrinkles: the lines that appear when you frown, raise your eyebrows, squint, or smile.
That’s all it does. It relaxes muscles. It doesn’t fill volume, it doesn’t tighten skin, it doesn’t remove pigmentation, and it doesn’t resurface texture. Understanding this distinction is critical because the majority of patient disappointment with Botox comes from expecting it to do something it was never designed to do.
What Botox treats: Dynamic wrinkles. Forehead lines (caused by the frontalis muscle raising the brows). Frown lines between the brows (caused by the corrugator and procerus muscles). Crow’s feet (caused by the orbicularis oculi muscle squinting). Bunny lines on the nose. A gummy smile (relaxing the muscle that over-elevates the upper lip). Jawline slimming (relaxing the masseter muscle to reduce jaw width). Excessive sweating (by blocking the nerve signals that trigger sweat glands).
What Botox does not treat: Static wrinkles (lines that are etched into the skin even at rest, which need fillers or skin resurfacing). Volume loss (hollow cheeks, temples, under-eyes, which need fillers). Skin laxity or sagging (which needs threads, HIFU, or a facelift). Pigmentation (which needs Cosmelan or peels). As Dr. Akanksha explained in her NDTV feature on Botox vs. fillers, these are fundamentally different treatments that address fundamentally different problems.
The Most Common Treatment Areas
Forehead lines
Horizontal lines across the forehead caused by raising the eyebrows. This is the most requested Botox area. Typically requires 10 to 20 units. The goal is softening, not erasing: some natural movement should remain so the forehead doesn’t look unnaturally smooth.
Frown lines (glabella / “11 lines”)
The vertical lines between the eyebrows that make you look angry or tired even when you’re neither. Typically requires 15 to 25 units. This is the area where Botox has its most dramatic, immediately visible effect.
Crow’s feet
The fan-shaped lines at the outer corners of the eyes that appear when you smile or squint. Typically requires 8 to 15 units per side. Treating crow’s feet softens the eye area without affecting the smile itself.
Bunny lines
The diagonal lines on either side of the nose that appear when you scrunch your nose. A small number of units (4 to 8) smooths these without affecting surrounding muscles.
Lip flip
A small number of units (4 to 6) injected along the upper lip border relaxes the orbicularis oris muscle slightly, allowing the upper lip to roll outward and appear fuller. This is not a substitute for lip filler but a subtle enhancement for patients who want a slightly more visible upper lip without adding volume.
Masseter / jawline slimming
Injecting Botox into the masseter muscles (the muscles used for chewing) causes them to gradually reduce in size over 4 to 8 weeks. The result is a slimmer, more V-shaped jawline. This is increasingly popular among both women and men. Typically requires 25 to 40 units per side. Also helps patients who clench or grind their teeth (bruxism).
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
Botox blocks the nerve signals that activate sweat glands, reducing excessive sweating in the underarms, palms, or forehead. Results last 6 to 9 months. More on our hyperhidrosis treatment page.
Botox Cost in Gurgaon: Units, Areas, and What to Expect
Botox is priced per unit. The cost per unit at established, doctor-led clinics in Gurgaon typically ranges from ₹300 to ₹600, depending on the brand used (Botox by Allergan, Dysport, Xeomin) and the clinic.
Here’s what common treatments typically cost:
| Area | Typical Units | Cost Range (₹) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forehead lines | 10 – 20 | ₹5,000 – ₹12,000 | Most common area |
| Frown lines (glabella) | 15 – 25 | ₹6,00,000 – ₹15,000 | Most dramatic result |
| Crow’s feet (both sides) | 16 – 30 | ₹5,000 – ₹15,000 | Per pair |
| Full upper face (all three) | 40 – 60 | ₹15,000 – ₹30,000 | The most requested combination |
| Bunny lines | 4 – 8 | ₹2,000 – ₹5,000 | Often added to upper face |
| Lip flip | 4 – 6 | ₹2,000 – ₹4,000 | Subtle upper lip enhancement |
| Masseter / jaw slimming | 50 – 80 | ₹20,000 – ₹50,000 | Both sides; 2–3 sessions for full effect |
| Underarm hyperhidrosis | 50 – 100 | ₹25,000 – ₹50,000 | Both underarms |
Ranges reflect pricing at Centre for Aesthetics using premium, authenticity-verified botulinum toxin brands. Unit counts are starting ranges and are determined during consultation based on muscle strength and treatment goals.
A common question: “Why do different clinics charge such different prices per unit?” The answer usually lies in the product. Genuine Botox (Allergan) and Dysport (Galderma) are pharmaceutical-grade, temperature-controlled, and batch-traceable. Cheaper alternatives may be diluted more aggressively (so you need more units for the same effect), stored improperly (reducing potency), or sourced from unverified suppliers. The per-unit price is only meaningful when you know what’s in the vial.
The “Frozen Face” Fear (Addressed Honestly)
This is the number one reason people hesitate. They’ve seen someone (a celebrity, a colleague, an aunt) whose forehead doesn’t move, whose eyebrows sit unnaturally high, whose face looks stiff and expressionless. And they think, “If that’s what Botox does, I don’t want it.”
That result is not Botox’s fault. It’s a dosing and placement problem. Too many units, too broadly distributed, in the hands of someone who prioritised smoothness over natural expression.
Well-placed Botox should make people think you look rested, not that you’ve had something done. Your forehead should still move. Your eyebrows should still express surprise, concern, amusement. The lines should soften, not disappear. The goal is relaxation, not paralysis.
At Centre for Aesthetics, we start conservative. It’s always easier to add a few more units at a two-week review than to wait out an overdose that takes 3 to 4 months to wear off. First-time patients especially benefit from this approach: see how your face responds to a moderate dose, then refine. The “frozen” look is entirely avoidable when the injector exercises restraint and the patient communicates what they want.
Botox vs. Filler: They’re Not the Same Thing
This comparison comes up in nearly every consultation, so here it is clearly:
Botox relaxes muscles. It treats lines caused by movement. It lasts 3 to 6 months. It’s priced per unit. Best for the upper face (forehead, frown, crow’s feet), jawline slimming, and sweating.
Fillers add volume. They treat structural loss and static lines. They last 12 to 18 months. They’re priced per ml. Best for cheeks, jawline definition, chin, lips, temples, and under-eyes.
They’re complementary, not competing. Many patients benefit from both: Botox for the upper face to relax dynamic lines, and fillers for the mid and lower face to restore volume. The dermal filler cost guide covers the filler side in detail.
The combined cost for a typical Botox + filler appointment (full upper face Botox at ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 plus structural filler at ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000) runs ₹55,000 to ₹1,25,000, with the Botox needing a top-up at 4 to 5 months and the filler lasting 12 to 14 months. The anti-ageing decades guide explains when each becomes relevant at different life stages.
When to Start Botox (The Preventive Conversation)
There’s no universal age to start. The decision should be based on what your face shows, not what your birthday says.
Preventive Botox (late 20s to early 30s): If you have strong dynamic lines that are starting to etch into the skin at rest (the frown line that’s visible even when you’re not frowning), small doses of Botox can prevent those lines from becoming permanent static creases. This is not about vanity at 28. It’s about preventing a deeper line at 45 that would need filler or resurfacing to fix. Prevention is cheaper, simpler, and more natural-looking than correction.
Corrective Botox (mid 30s and beyond): If the lines are already etched at rest, Botox relaxes the muscles that created them, which stops them from deepening further. Over multiple treatments, the muscle weakens and the lines can soften. In some cases, the existing static lines may benefit from a combination of Botox (to stop the muscle) and microneedling or light filler (to smooth the line itself).
No Botox needed: If your face doesn’t show significant dynamic lines and you’re not bothered by the ones you have, you don’t need Botox. We don’t recommend treatment for problems that don’t exist yet and may never develop. Some people have naturally less expressive muscle patterns and never develop deep forehead lines. If that’s you, save your money.
What a Session Looks Like
Duration: 10 to 15 minutes. Botox is genuinely one of the fastest aesthetic procedures available.
Pain: Minimal. The needles used are extremely fine (30 to 32 gauge). Most patients describe it as a mild pinch. No anaesthesia is required. If you’re particularly sensitive, a topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand.
Immediately after: Small red dots at the injection sites that fade within 30 minutes. You can return to work immediately. No downtime. Avoid rubbing the treated area for 4 hours and avoid lying flat for 4 hours (to prevent the product from migrating). Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours.
Results timeline: The effect begins at day 3 to 5, peaks at day 10 to 14, and lasts 3 to 6 months depending on the area, the dose, and your individual metabolism. The first treatment typically wears off faster (closer to 3 months). With regular treatments, the duration tends to extend (closer to 5 to 6 months) as the muscles gradually weaken with repeated relaxation.
Follow-up: A two-week review is standard for first-time patients. If the result is slightly uneven or if additional units would improve the outcome, a small top-up is done at this visit. This conservative start-and-adjust approach is how we avoid the frozen look.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Botox safe?
Botox has been used clinically for over 30 years with an extensive safety record, both in aesthetics and in medical applications (chronic migraine, muscle spasticity, overactive bladder). When administered by a qualified doctor at appropriate doses, the safety profile is well-established. Side effects are rare and typically mild: occasional bruising at the injection site, temporary headache, or slight asymmetry that can be corrected at the two-week review.
Will people know I’ve had Botox?
Not if it’s done well. Properly dosed, well-placed Botox makes you look rested and relaxed, not altered. The lines soften. The face looks refreshed. Nobody can point at what’s different unless you tell them.
How often do I need Botox?
Every 3 to 6 months initially. With regular treatments over time, many patients find they can extend the interval to 5 to 6 months as the targeted muscles gradually weaken.
Can I get Botox and filler in the same appointment?
Yes. Botox for the upper face and filler for the mid and lower face is a common combination at Centre for Aesthetics. They’re administered in the same session with no conflict between the two.
What happens if I stop getting Botox?
Your muscles gradually return to their pre-treatment activity level, and the dynamic lines reappear. You won’t look worse than before you started. You’ll simply return to how you would have looked without treatment. There’s no rebound effect or dependency.
Does Botox hurt more than filler?
Less. The needles are finer, the injection volume is smaller, and no anaesthesia is needed. Most patients find Botox significantly more comfortable than filler injections.
Your Next Step
If you’re curious about Botox but not sure whether you need it, how much you need, or what it will cost for your specific face, the consultation answers all of that in about 15 minutes.
At Centre for Aesthetics, we’ll assess your muscle activity, identify which areas would benefit from treatment, recommend a unit count, and give you a transparent quote. If Botox isn’t the right answer for what you’re seeing in the mirror (maybe you need filler instead, or maybe you don’t need anything yet), we’ll tell you.
